I do enjoy original stories, but JRPGs are full of tropes, and this one features the kind of tropes that I like rather than the tropes of modern JRPGs, which mostly involve women with massive breasts leaning over the camera like theyРІР‚в„ўre looking for their contact lenses while wearing clothes tenuously clinging to their body with more several hundred yards of costume tape. Most JRPGs are derivative, and thatРІР‚в„ўsРІР‚В¦sort of okay. I donРІР‚в„ўt want to imply that I didnРІР‚в„ўt like I am Setsuna.

We meet a former guardian with a massive club, a child with magical powers, the queen to a fallen kingdom who wrecks things with a sword, and a recurring boss with a colossal scythe. Dropping the mercenary bit before they game has even gotten off the ground, Endir plays Tidus to her Yuna, and they cross a frostbitten world on the way to the Last Lands, a rather blandly named place where Setsuna is prepared to give her life for the sake of the world that sheРІР‚В¦lives in. I am Setsuna is the story of the eponymous Setsuna, the latest in a long line of sacrifices to keep the monsters of the world at bay, and her guardian Endir, a silent shell of a man who is hired to murder Setsuna before she can begin her journey. And it really got the full treatment, with lovely inlay art, and a small insert detailing the controller layout. A nice touch, mind you, but IРІР‚в„ўm baffled as to why this didnРІР‚в„ўt just come out in the states if all of the ground work was done. When I finally received the game, it came in a lovely, tiny little Nintendo Switch card case, with two cover art panels, one in the original Japanese, the other in English. Of course, IРІР‚в„ўm the kind of insane that says that I should import it if I wanted the physical release so badly.

Unfortunately, a $40 price tag and digital only PS4 launch meant that I was pretty sour at Square-Enix, and I am Setsuna passed me by until 2017, when the Japanese Nintendo Switch launch saw a fresh new physical release. Gorgeous visual design accompanied a combat system ripped right out of Chrono Trigger, and that was all it took for me to start throwing a my cash right at my monitor. Oh well, IРІР‚в„ўm not talking about that one anyway. Sarcasm aside, I was interested from moment one, and was thoroughly impressed by the first reveal of I am Setsuna in late 2015, announced alongside a new SaGa game, and some other game that completely escapes my memory right now. I know, I know, itРІР‚в„ўs almost like having a legacy of great turn based RPGs with varying degrees of super melodramatic storytelling and intricate mechanics means something. For whatever reason, the money men at Square-Enix thought it was downright unbelievable that an old fashioned JRPG was such a hit from a corporation that was once known for itРІР‚в„ўs amazing JRPGs. The move still stuns me, to a degree because of the bizarre logic that SE showed in their decision. I can recall Square-Enix announcing the opening of their Tokyo RPG Factory studio in the wake of the success of Bravely Default.
